Your charities co-ordinators for 2010 are Lawson Ung, Aditi Mahajan and Grace Leo (Med II).
WE NEED YOU!!! Charities work is a very important aspect of Medsoc. Whilst we have been given a whole range of opportunities-there are many people across the world without them. Many medicine students are particularly conscious of needs regarding health care and services and Medsoc charities pays particular attention to these causes. Over the last few years, charity-related events have been growing as not only a good way of contributing to society, but also a great day out!
Bowling Days/Nights – Held once a term, students can bowl at AMF Randwick at a cheaper rate and profits are given to Medsoc, providing initial capital for charity events.
The Amazing Raise – A themed parody of the actual Amazing Race, teams of 4-6 run around Sydney following clues and completing ridiculous tasks from skulling slurpies to belting out "Twinkle twinkle little star" on the street. Teams raise money from their communities for the Medical Students' Aid Project in the weeks leading up to the 'raise' as there is a $100 entry fee and extra money is used to give an advantage-clues come at a price! (Teaching Period 2: May 22nd)
Medshave – Get the shaver and hairspray ready to go!! Hair will be cut (or coloured) fundraising for the Cancer Council. Some very special hair-dos have fallen in the name of promoting healthier lifestyles and financial assistance for those with cancer. (Teaching Period 3 ~ July)
Gold Week – Selling badges for the Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation. (TP2 June 1-7)
40 Hour Famine – Make a sacrifice with a group of friends to support World Vision's causes.
Outdoor Movie Night and Gelato Days - Catch a flick under the stars or savour some icecream for good reason. (All through the year)
Besides participants, we'd also love some volunteers to help run our different activities! As a volunteer, you'll be rewarded by some great experiences e.g. pointing and laughing at the craziest hair pieces you can imagine or at sweaty amazing raise competitors, building skills in teamwork/organising events and you'll get a few awesome limited edition t-shirts too. New ideas from med students about activities which could be used to help raise funds for worthy causes are also welcome. This year, we're also interested in helping to raise awareness about needs around the world via meeting groups and/or distribution of information.
Just email: for all your ideas or queries! |
